Description of the project:

The Person counter and Password detector project consists of two modules.

  • The first module is the bidirectional Person counter.
  • The second module is Password operated Lock.

The main concept behind this project is to measure and display the number of persons entering in any room like a seminar hall, or conference room. LCD display placed outside the room displays this value. And when the number of persons inside the room is zero, the power supply inside the room can be cut using a relay interface. The second part of the project serves the functionality of a door-latch opening using a password entered through the keypad. As well as sending this data to a computer through a serial port. This module also turns on the buzzer if 3 wrong passwords are entered consequently. Users can change this password anytime he/she wish using a keypad.

A detailed description of Person counter and Password detector:

This project serves two important objectives:

  1. Power Saver / Energy saving: It is done by counting the number of persons inside any room and when the count is zero, lights are turned off. Two pairs of IR transmitters and receivers are used for counting.
  2. Keyless entry to home/office: Many times we forget to carry keys to our office or home. Or sometimes the key is lost or can be duplicated. So we have designed a Password detector circuit that opens a door latch when the correct password is entered using Keypad

Description in detail:

There is a variety of sensor based projects for ece, and this project is It mainly consists of the following blocks:

  1. Transmitter: We have implemented the Person counter module using 2 transmitters and 2 receivers. We have used Infra-Red transmitters because infrared beams are not visible to human eyes. The transmitter used are IR LEDs
  2. Receiver: We have used an Infrared receiver. It is an active low device which means it gives a low output when it receives Infrared rays.
  3. LCD: We have used a 16×2 alphanumeric Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) which means it can display alphabets along with numbers on 2 lines each containing 16 characters.
  4. PC Interfacing: We have used a MAX 232 IC for pc interfacing, the values of the number of persons inside the room and the status of entered password (Correct/wrong) will be sent to the PC.
  5. Keypad: The user needs to enter the password using the keypad. Various keys of the keypad are:
    • 0 to 9
    • Enter
    • Escape
  6. Microcontroller: This is the CPU (central processing unit) of our project. We are going to use a microcontroller of an 8051 family. The various functions of the microcontroller are:
    • Reading the digital input from two infrared receivers and calculating the number of persons from them.
    • Sending this data to LCD so that the person operating this project should read the number of persons inside the room.
    • Sensing the password using a keypad and checking whether it is a correct password or a wrong password
    • Rotating the DC/stepper motor if the password entered is the correct password.
    • Sending the data to the computer using the serial port. This data consists of the number of persons inside the room and the status of entered password (Correct/wrong).

    Applications and Advantages of Person counter and Password detector:

    1. Can be used in various rooms like the seminar halls, conference rooms, and study rooms in college where the capacity of the room is limited and should not be exceeded. So the project will display the actual number of persons inside the room.
    2. The other part of the project (password detector) can be used to automate the door-locking process, so the user does need not to carry the door lock keys along with him, he can just remember the password and use it later to open the door

    Future Development:

    1. This data can be sent to a remote location using mobile or internet
    2. We can implement other related modules like fire sensors, and wind sensors.
    3. A voice alarm system can be added to indicate that the room is full and persons can’t enter inside.

    Question: Can you change the keypad password unlocker to a voice detection method of opening the door?

    Answer: Sorry, we can not implement voice detector in this project.

    Question: Why stepper motor is required? Why motor is used?

    Answer: We are providing the application for Door latch opening. So to demonstrate this, we are providing a motor (DC or Stepper)

    Question: I needed the person counter system which turns off the light when zero persons are there in the room.

    Answer: This feature is included in this project. This part work as an energy saver

      i have one doubt…when i connecting dc motor to rotate the fan the count will be automatically incremented and it cannot come to zero.what is the problem behind it?can you tell me the solution?
