Alcohol detector with buzzer indicator mini project

This low-cost Alcohol detector with buzzer indicator mini project can be used on college campuses and hospitals. It can also be used in Companies. This low-cost alcohol detection system can be installed in a vehicle to detect if the driver has drunk alcohol.

Project Code: 1094

Description of the project:

This is an important sensor based project implemented using microcontroller. In this project, we have interfaced the MQ series gas sensor with an 8051 microcontroller. We cannot interface the alcohol sensor directly to the 8051 microcontroller because the output of the gas sensor is in analog format. The 8051 microcontroller recognizes only digital input. The best and the most low-cost solution for this is to connect a comparator between the gas sensor and the Microcontroller.

The comparator contains an operational amplifier comparator that has two inputs. One input is from the sensor and another is from the Potentiometer. Whenever the sensor value crosses the threshold limit then the comparator output goes high. In this way, the microcontroller comes to know that the alcohol percentage is more than the threshold limit. A potentiometer can be used to vary the trigger level or the threshold limit.

We have provided a piezoelectric buzzer for this project. This Buzzer will be turned on whenever this project detects alcohol. This Buzzer helps to alert the people that the person undergoing the test for alcohol detection has consumed alcohol. This buzzer is driven through a transistor.

We have also provided an LCD display in this alcohol detector mini-project. LCD display shows two messages. Whenever you turn on the project, LCD shows the project title. And whenever alcohol is detected, the system shows the message as the Alcohol sensor crossed the limit.

  5. A transformer, a voltage regulator, a bridge rectifier, and a filter capacitor are used as a part of the power supply to generate 5-volt DC-regulated supply voltage.
  6. Crystal, Resistor, Capacitor, Transistor, and Potentiometers are used at various places in the circuit

Software specification :

  • The microcontroller program is written in Assembly language
  • PCB Layout is designed using EAGLE software
  • HEX file downloaded in microcontroller using Flashmagic software

Applications of low cost Alcohol detector with buzzer indicator

  1. This is one of the 8051 based mini projects which have applications in college campuses, companies, and various organizations. It can detect if the student or the employee has consumed alcohol.
  2. This breath analyzer project has its main application in “drunk and drive detection”. It can be used as an alcohol detector for vehicles.

Future development

  1. With extra modification in this circuit, it can be used to control the vehicle after alcohol detection.
  2. We can also add GPS and GSM in this project so that the location of the vehicle can be identified once the alcohol detection is done.

Advantages of Alcohol detector with buzzer indicator

  1. The main advantage of this system is the low-cost implementation. Because of this low cost, it can be used in many places.
  2. The normal alcohol detectors which are available in the market have a considerable cost, so everyone cannot afford those systems. But with this project, we are proposing a low-cost solution for an alcohol detection system.

NOTE

Please note that we have not used analog to digital converter in this project so as to reduce the cost. This project does not display the percentage or the amount of alcohol sensed by the sensor. It will just display the level if it is high level or low level. That means if alcohol consumption is detected or not.

If you want to display the alcohol percentage then you need to Interface ADC in this project. We have implemented this project with an ADC alcohol detector with vehicle control.
