Description of the project:

In the Vehicle tracking system project, you can track the location of your vehicle. Also, if you have Google Maps installed on your smartphone then you can get the exact location of the vehicle on Google Maps. This project gives Minute-by-minute updates about vehicle location by sending a text SMS through a GSM modem. This SMS contains a URL that has the longitude and latitude of the location of the vehicle.

The user needs to click on the URL in the SMS, then the smartphone will open the link in Google Maps and will show a red marker location on the map. This red marker represents the location of the Vehicle. The microcontroller is the central processing unit CPU of our project. The microcontroller gets the coordinates from the GPS modem and then it sends this information to the user in Text SMS. A GSM modem is used to send this information via SMS. SMS will be sent to the owner of the vehicle.

GPS based Vehicle tracking system is required in many situations, like in the case of car theft detection. Car tracking using GPS project will be useful when our car is stolen. Also if somebody wants to track the school bus of their children, at that time it will be helpful to find out the location of the kids. One more situation is when some company wants to track the location of the cab or transport bus of an employee then, in this case, this vehicle tracking system will be very useful.

In the GPS tracking system, the location of the vehicle is sent to a remote place and it is done by a GSM modem. Global Positioning System (GPS) modem requires a minimum of 3 satellites to calculate the exact location. This modem communicates only in a single way with an 8051 microcontroller. This means that it can only transmit data to the microcontroller. GPS Modem does not receive any data from the microcontroller. At the same time, the GPS modem does not send data to Satellites, it only receives signals from satellites.

We have seen that there are various GPS projects available and this is one of the important projects among them. This project consists of the following blocks:

  1. GPS Modem – This transmits data out to the microcontroller.
  2. GSM Modem – This receives data from the microcontroller.
  3. Microcontroller – It deals with all the input and output devices.
  4. LCD Display
  5. Keypad
  6. Max232

Applications and Advantages of Vehicle Tracking System:

  1. School transport Tracking: “Vehicle tracking system” can be used as a GPS tracking device for school buses.
  2. This project can be used as an Office cab tracking system, for the detection of cabs or cars of companies.
  3. Theft Protection: This project can be very useful when your vehicle or car is stolen.
  4. We can implement this project in our bikes, two-wheeler, motorcycles, and four-wheelers as well.

Future Development:

  1. We can develop this project using Arduino. Arduino Vehicle Tracker System using GPS & GSM is implemented using an Arduino Uno board.
  2. We can monitor some parameters of vehicles like overheating or LPG gas leakage
  3. We can dial an emergency call if the vehicle goes out of a certain / pre-decided track.

How to track the location on the actual Map

The answer to this is simple, if the user has a smartphone then he/she can simply click on the URL in the SMS received.

However, if the user does not have a smartphone then, it would be time-consuming to track location on Printed maps. But nowadays various websites and apps are available on the internet which show an online map. Google Maps is one of the main and most useful websites. You can use any one of these websites to track or find the location of the vehicle. You can track the location using Longitude and Latitude received in SMS.

Using these maps you can track vehicles and get the exact location as well as directions to go to those places from your current/desired location. All you need to do is copy the contents of Text SMS received from SMS based Vehicle tracking system using GPS into Google Maps.

Question: Which GSM modem is used in this project? can we use a mobile handset instead of the modem?

Answer : We have used SIMcom 900 GSM modem. No, we can’t use mobile handset

Question: Can we add sensors to this project? Can we enhance this project to add some more modules?

Answer : Yes, we can enhance this project.We can add these Modules: LPG gas sensor, Temperature sensor etc.

    • HI shamita, this is an educational project, we have used LCD display to show various messages. Various messages are displayed to understanding the current state / progress of the project. Like invalid gps co-ordinates, sending message, message sent. This will also helps us to find out the error/problem while designing the project. In actual implementation, LCD will be replaced by LEDs of different colors which will indicate the status of project.

  • Is this model possible to implement in any vehicle, and thus it gives the exact location instead of giving the longitude & latitude in message or it is possible to know the exact location by enabling the gps in our handset ( by using road map it gives the movement of vehicle).

    • Hi Ajitesh singh, your question is valid since there is single RX and single TX pin for 8051 microcontroller (which means only one uart port). we can use UART Switch so that we can use two Serial Port Applications.

    • Hi palak, as we are using GPS and GSM modem, it has huge range. The range of GSM modem depends on the mobile network provider range. In other words range depends on which company's simcard you are using.

  • i think this project is limited applications ,
    1.i want to add one breath sensor for driver is drinking or not at the time automatically fuel cutoff or stop the engine.
    2.i want to automatic speed controlling when exceeding the speed limit by using the black box.
